That night, Decius returned to my dreams. It was different from my earlier visions of my former centurion. He seemed faded, almost translucent, as if he was trying to reach me from a long distance. His presence still induced an almost uncontrollable fear within me. No distance could ever veil that, but I found it hard to see what he was trying to show me. He held something in his hands, something important, but for the life of me I couldn’t tell what it was. When I awoke from the dream, my heart was beating and I was covered in a cold sweat. I was relieved that he’d returned to me but torn in frustration by his message being obscured. Decius’ visits were always important and they normally gave me warning or pointed to the way I needed to act. Why he decided to only join my dreams now I didn’t know, just as I couldn’t tell what it was he was trying to show me.

Both Aulus and Aigneis were still sleeping soundly in their beds, the fire had died down to a few embers that glowed in the dark room. I lay back on my bed, trying to place the pieces together in my head. Sleep was elusive after that.
